Seeing An Allergist

An allergist is a doctor who has specialized training in the identification, management and treatment of allergies and asthma.

For some people with allergies, diagnosis and treatment are handled by their primary care or family doctor. But for others, and in complicated cases, the primary care doctor may recommend that the patient see an allergist to confirm the diagnosis and to determine the exact cause of the allergies.

What to expect from your visit

When you see an allergist, he or she will begin the work of diagnosing your exact condition by asking questions about your medical history, allergy symptoms, family history, and home, school, or workplace environments. From there, the allergist may do skin tests or other allergy tests to help isolate the specific triggers that cause your allergies.

Your allergist will work with you to develop a plan to help you manage your nasal allergy symptoms—from help in avoiding exposure to your allergy triggers, to medications, allergy shots or other treatment options.
